4 Reasons Why You Should Learn How to Play the Piano

How many of you took piano lessons as a kid?

And then how many of you stopped soon after?

Whether it’s due to scheduling conflicts or a lack of interest, sometimes music lessons just don’t happen. But here are 4 reasons why you should learn how to play the piano:

1. It teaches discipline.

One reason children (and adults) quit piano lessons is because of how much hard work goes into mastering the instrument. It takes daily devoted time to learn the necessary technique, and this takes a lot of discipline. Playing the keys teaches you time management and self-control, and it gives you opportunities to learn how to do hard things by pushing through the hard times.

2. It teaches physical balance and coordination.

The technical aspect of playing the piano (technique: the physical playing of the instrument) requires consistent training to master. It teaches balance through fine-tuning the physical coordination between your hands and your brain. The piano also teaches your brain how to use both the left and the right hemispheres as you strengthen your hands and your coordination.

3. It teaches art.

You learn art through playing the piano by exposing yourself to music of all varieties. Because no two songs, sonatas, or scherzos are the same, each piece of music leaves you with a new experience of art that you can use to better your musicianship and your life. Every composer writes with an artistic end goal in mind, and by playing their music, you open your mind to new experiences.

4. It teaches emotion

Music is a means of communication. It tells a story or paints a picture. By learning how to play the piano, you choose to experience the emotion in each piece of music that you play. This teaches you how to express empathy and love, deal with heartbreak and anger, and so much more. You also learn how to face frustrations that arise in your practicing as you work to become better at playing.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should learn how to play the piano. It’s never too late to start!

    1. Technically speaking, I never did any piano exams growing up. So I would say no, it’s not necessary to pass piano level exams. It’s just important to be willing to learn. 🙂

  1. I especially like reason #4 (all are good, I’ve just heard them before). There’s a lot of people today who don’t know how to best express their emotions, so learning how to play the piano (or any other instrument, I assume) becomes especially valuable for that reason alone! Thanks for sharing these points!

  2. This is such a wonderful post! Personally, I started playing the piano when I was around the age of nine. I gave it up a few years later, suffering from serious mental health issues and a bout of laziness. Coincidentally, I got into digital music production soon after, and then got back into piano, albeit composing instead of playing formally. I’ve been a self-proclaimed composer and producer for about six years, now, and at the age of eighteen I can say for certain that I am a much more well-established person than I was at nine, due to playing this beautiful instrument. I know that I don’t play classically, anymore, but I hope that my experience gave a little bit of outside insight, haha! Thank you for writing this; I’ll most likely end up writing my own post about my experience, now!

Wishing you well in your musical endeavours,

    1. I’m so glad you liked the post! It doesn’t matter how music manifests itself in our lives for it to strengthen us; I’m so glad you found a way to express yourself through music and the piano (even if you don’t play classically). 🙂 It’s amazing how music connects us all! Good luck with your own composing and producing.

  3. I always wanted to learn how to play the piano. I played when I was 5 years old but never picked it up again. It is a beautiful instrument and I plan on taking lessons in the near future. Cool article!
