Music Favorites Part 2

Welcome to the second installment of Music Favorites. Check out part 1 here!

It’s so hard for me to pick a favorite piece of music. It’s like asking a mom to pick her favorite child or a movie fanatic to pick his favorite film. But I have compiled a list of my favorite works to share, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber

First up: Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. I know, it’s a little cliché, but this piece tugs at the heartstrings and takes the listener on a journey. [I’ve also written a piece inspired by this work; check it out here.]

Debussy, Image Book 1

Next is Debussy’s Image Book 1. This list wouldn’t be complete without a little Debussy, right? I had the opportunity to perform this at my senior recital in May, 2016. I love how colorful this piece is; each movement tells a different story yet they all fit together somehow. Reflets dans l’eau (“Reflections in the water”) shows off the beauty of shimmering water, Hommage a Rameau (“Tribute to Rameau”) tells a story of Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, and Mouvement is just that – movement.

Tchaikovsky’s 1st Symphony

Tchaikovsky‘s Symphony No. 1 is another favorite. I used to listen to this piece first thing every morning! It’s an underrated work – not nearly as well known as some of his other music, sadly. Nicknamed Winter Dreams, each of the four movements characterizes the crisp rhythms and tight harmonies of Russian folk music.

Cascade by William Baskinsky

And finally (for today), a 21st-century ambient piece. What I love about this work is how simple and understated it is.

What are some of your favorite pieces of music?
