A Million Skies: An Ambient/Classical Album

Happy Friday! To celebrate, I have just released a new album called A Million Skies! You can stream/download it on Spotify, Apple Music (iTunes), Google Play, Amazon Music, and pretty much any other streaming service.

About A Million Skies

A Million Skies (the album) was first realized as a track called A Million Skies that I composed back in the summer of 2018:

And it just kind of went from there! I loved the idea of combining improvisation, ambient/electronic sounds, and classical ideas into something new, so I kept making more and more of these kinds of tracks. Eventually I realized I had enough music to make an album.

The Album: A Classical and Ambient Mix

In general, my compositional style is kind of a mash-up of classical and ambient (even in my instrumental works – I love using minimalism to convey that “ambient” atmosphere in my piano solos and ensemble pieces). You will hear both of those influences in A Million Skies.

The album uses a fun and unique set of instruments ranging from synthesizers to pianos to strings and back. This is key to understanding both the classical and ambient aspects of A Million Skies. I used a lot of beautiful, sustained synths to create that “lost-in-space” type of atmosphere – the ambient aspect of the album. And I used string sounds (lots of cellos) to provide harmonic structure in many of the tracks – the classical element. Combine these with the improvised minimalist motifs in the piano, and there you have it! A nice combination of ambient, classical, minimalist, and improv all rolled into one.

Each track is unique in its sound and atmosphere, but they all tell the story of the universe. I will be diving deeper into each piece over the next few weeks (as well as posting the videos on YouTube), so stay tuned for that.

By the way, some of the tracks in A Million Skies are based on works from famous composers (don’t worry, it’s all public domain!). Can you figure out which ones?

  1. Hi Kathryn, I’ve tended to be a bit ambivalent towards some of your piano-only pieces, which perhaps reflects my own attitudes towards Minimalist music; this, however, is a revelation, and, for me, shows what you’re capable of when your sonic imagination is given more room to breathe. In short, I’m now definitely a fan of yours, and keenly await your compositional adventures to come!
